De Franse filosoof Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995) merkte in een kort, maar daarom niet minder belangrijk artikel op dat we op het einde van de 20ste eeuw van de disciplinaire samenleving (zie Michel Foucault) overgegaan zijn naar een controlemaatschappij. Hij wil komen tot “[a] better understanding of what is meant by the crisis of the institutions [door de implementatie van controle], which is to say, the progressive and dispersed installation of a new system of domination.”.
