When discussing the motifs that make up a sociological consciousness, Peter L. Berger gives us four motifs; debunking, unrespectability, relativizing and a fourth “less far-reaching in its implications” (though the most far-reaching to our concerns): “the cosmopolitan motif”.

Rik Pinxten over steden & cultuur

Cultuurfilosoof Rik Pinxten merkt op dat het falen van democraten t.a.z. van het opkomende extreem-rechtse discours ligt in hun minimieme aandacht “voor cultuur in een moderne staat, en deels omdat diezelfde democraten lang blind bleven voor de problemen van de verstedelijking” (Pinxten 2003: 10). Allereerst kan “een rechtvaardige en duurzame samenleving [...] alleen maar mee bewerkstelligd worden door de mens als cultuurwezen en vooral als cultuurmaker hoger te waarderen” (Pinxten 2003: 11). En laat die cultuur nu eens bovenal stedelijk zijn: “Stedelijkheid en cultuur, we kunnen er niet buiten.” (17) (Ook: “Het socio-artistieke werk hoeft niet beperkt te zijn tot de stadscontext, maar het is dat in de praktijk wel.” (60)). Kort gezegd stedelijkheid moet “voor elk beleid in en buiten het Westen een hoofdthema worden.” (109). Zie verder p. 109-123 in Pinxten 2003. Cultuur staat, volgens Pinxten, terecht gelijk aan “multicultuur in verstedelijkte contexten” (166)

Gilles Deleuze over onderwijs & globalizatie

De Franse filosoof Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995) merkte in een kort, maar daarom niet minder belangrijk artikel op dat we op het einde van de 20ste eeuw van de disciplinaire samenleving (zie Michel Foucault) overgegaan zijn naar een controlemaatschappij. Hij wil komen tot “[a] better understanding of what is meant by the crisis of the institutions [door de implementatie van controle], which is to say, the progressive and dispersed installation of a new system of domination.”. Dit heeft grote gevolgen voor instituties als het onderwijs.

City on the Gulf: Koolhaas Lays Out a Grand Urban Experiment in Dubai (The New York Times, 3 maart 2008)

It has been 12 years since the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas unleashed his concept of “the generic city,” a sprawling metropolis of repetitive buildings centered on an airport and inhabited by a tribe of global nomads with few local loyalties. His argument was that in its profound sameness, the generic city was a more accurate reflection of contemporary urban reality than nostalgic visions of New York or Paris.

• Aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw leefde zowat 10 % van de wereldbevolking in een stad
• In 1975 was dit cijfer gestegen naar 37,8 % van de wereldbevolking
