About this blog
This blog is meant to be a personal archieve centering around literature, art, philosophy and sociology. Its objective is not only to provide me and others with the valuable information I collect daily from other blogs, sites, newspapers and books, but also to work through some of the questions I have been asking myself.
- What could we possible mean by “acts of reading”? Does ‘literature make something happen’ or does it only affect our attitudes of the world we live in, or (in the worst case scenario) is literature a non-committal throw-away product produced to entertain us.
- Following the first question, how to interact with the world. A world which is rapidly changing; altering our sense of moral, aesthetical, political, economical, cultural worth. How and how much are we responsible for others (there is no universalization of values)? What is beautiful (other cultures fundamentally challenge our Western ideals of beauty)? How much political leverage do we and politicians still have left? How is one to influence the economy? What culture we should strive for (Enlightenment ideals of reason and science, religiously dogmatic, multicultural, monocultural)?
- How then do we learn or teach theses supposedly valuable things we gather from the company of literature or art?
This blog is not solely named “Acts of Reading” because it focuses on literature and art, but also because it is meant to bring together my own acts of reading. It features:
- Novels, movies, graphic novels, poetry, theatre
- Quotes from theoretical works (sociology, literary theory, philosophy, …)
- Contemplations (if I have them…)
